Nehrling Gardens
Nehrling Gardens Mission Nehrling Gardens' mission is to educate, inspire and create awareness about the intrinsic value of Florida's horticultural history, of its plant and birds, and of the community's cultural heritage; and to assist in the conservation and protection of natural resources in Central Florida. To achieve these goals The Henry Nehrling Society seeks to continue rehabilitating Dr. Nehrling's historic Gotha home and gardens, create new teaching gardens, and provide a horticultural, historical, and environmental education center to promote these concepts. The Nehrling Gardens will be a horticultural, environmental, historical education center by: • implementing interactive exhibits focusing on the many-faceted works of Henry Nehrling, the history of ornamental plants in Florida, and North American birds. • promoting and teaching environmentally sound gardening and landscaping practices. • developing an awareness of the German-American cultural heritage that created the Gotha community in the late 1800s. • providing a wildlife observation deck and restoring and conserving the aquatic plant life on Lake Nally. • providing access to the programs of the University of Florida's Cooperative Extension Service and collaborating with partners whose goals are compatible. Nehrling Gardens will promote conservation and protection of natural resources in Central Florida through conservation and sustainable practices by: • integrating sustainable practices into teaching gardens, exhibits, and horticultural programs. • utilizing energy and water-efficient techniques to provide low-maintenance landscapes. • creating a site plan that preserves existing natural vegetation and native plants. • utilizing alternative water sources for irrigation (reclaimed water, etc.). • focusing on local conditions, native plants, and appropriate non-native, non-invasive ornamentals. • applying the principles of green architecture to new and renovated structures. Our Philosophy The Henry Nehrling Society is a non-profit organization created in 1999 with the express purpose to preserve Henry Nehrling's 1880s Palm Cottage Gardens and to create an Education Center. Our mission embraces historic preservation, horticultural education, and environmental conservation. Our mission is guided by our philosophy: We inspire learning and appreciation of the pioneer horticulturist and ornithologist, Henry Nehrling, and of Florida's horticultural history. We share our heritage site, resources, and expertise with the public with the primary goal to educate. Our educational outreach is to children, adults, organizations, and businesses; the project is multicultural and accessible to all socio-economic backgrounds. We are an integral part of our community; we also seek a wider audience with national and international entities. We promote sustainable and innovative conservation methods in the rehabilitation of the home and the development of the garden. We work with Nature rather than substitute Nature, "Nature must be our teacher." We embrace collaboration and partnerships with higher learning institutions. We preserve the "Old Florida" late 1800s character of the home and garden. In keeping with Henry Nehrling's original garden our design is "a garden more natural than artistic." We are a part of the early 1885 German-American settlement of Gotha supporting the preservation of the community's historical roots.
